Unlocking Universal Energy Access

The Challenge

Solutions exist but remain out of reach

Nearly 800 million people worldwide – 85% in Africa – have no access to electricity. For those with access to the grid, less than half of Africans report having a reliable supply of electricity. In rural Africa, only one in three people have access to electricity. Fossil fuels account for over 70% of Africa’s grid power.

Africa is home to the world’s strongest solar potential but has less than 1% of global installed solar capacity. Despite rapidly falling solar costs and Africa becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing adopters of solar, upfront costs still exclude most low-income households and businesses.

An ever-evolving suite of standalone solar systems reflects Africa’s energy needs, offering different power levels that align affordability with demand. Yet, important challenges remain:

  • Limited investment at the scale required to reach millions of households and businesses.
  • Uneven product quality, undermining trust and impact.
  • Many remote and low-income communities still lack access to installation and maintenance services.
